What Is the 1769-DPS?
The Allen-Bradley 1769-DPS is a PROFIBUS DP slave communication module built for CompactLogix and MicroLogix 1500 systems. It lets an Allen-Bradley controller operate as a slave node on a PROFIBUS-DP network, exchanging cyclic process and control data with a PROFIBUS DP master. This is an Encompass third-party module, so it is not a Rockwell first-party catalog item.
For plants running mixed control architectures, that role matters. Many facilities keep a PROFIBUS segment alive for drives, remote I/O, or legacy skids while standardizing the rest of the line on CompactLogix. The 1769-DPS bridges that gap without a full network migration.

Baud Rate and Data Throughput
The 9.6 kbps to 12 Mbps range covers slow legacy segments and fast cyclic exchange on the same hardware. At the top end, 12 Mbps suits time-sensitive control data. At the low end, the module still talks to older PROFIBUS devices that never needed high speed.
Address Configuration
A rotary switch sets the station address from 1 to 126. That is a practical detail for maintenance teams: no software tool is required to change the node address on the bench or in the panel. Configuration is completed through the rotary switch and configuration software.
Backplane Power
The module draws 5V DC from the 1769 backplane, so it needs no separate field power supply for its own operation. In a CompactLogix chassis, the 1769 power supply module feeds the bus, supporting up to eight I/O modules per side of the supply.

Installation Notes
The 1769-DPS follows standard Bulletin 1769 mounting practice. It installs on a panel with two screws or on DIN rail, locks to adjacent modules through tongue-and-groove, and shares the integrated bus through a movable bus connector. It plugs onto the controller’s right-side expansion bus.
Set the rotary address switch before power-up, and confirm the address is unique on the PROFIBUS segment. Keep the module within the 0 to 60 C operating range and allow normal panel ventilation.
Integration Note
Wiring a 1769 module into a PROFIBUS network may require an external gateway or connection module. Confirm the correct cables and gateways with your supplier before commissioning.
Maintenance and Reliability
Inspect the module periodically as part of routine panel checks. Verify the rotary switch has not been disturbed, confirm bus cabling is secure, and watch for heat buildup around the rack. Because the module is backplane-powered, there is no separate supply to service.
