Product Overview
When a ControlLogix rack loses an output card, production stops. The Allen-Bradley 1756-OB16E is a single-slot discrete DC output module built for exactly that moment. It gives you sixteen electronically fused outputs across two groups of eight, switching 24 VDC loads such as relay coils, solenoid valves, pilot lamps and sirens. As a Rockwell Automation ControlLogix series module, it drops into any 1756 local or distributed I/O chassis.

Key Parameters That Matter
Output Voltage and Load Handling
The module operates from 10-31.2 VDC with a nominal 24 VDC output. Each point carries up to 1 A at 60 °C, and the full module handles 8 A at 60 °C. Minimum load current is 3 mA per channel, so small pilot devices still switch cleanly.
Electronic Fusing Per Group
Two electronically fused groups of eight outputs each protect your wiring without replaceable fuses. If one group faults, the other keeps running. That split architecture limits downtime to half a card instead of the whole rack slot.
Switching Speed
OFF-to-ON delay is 70 µs nominal (1 ms max). ON-to-OFF delay is 360 µs nominal (1 ms max). For high-speed sorting, packaging and interlock logic, that response keeps cycle times predictable.
Backplane and Thermal Load
The module draws 250 mA at 5.1 V and 2 mA at 24 V from the backplane. Maximum power dissipation is 4.1 W at 60 °C, with thermal dissipation of 13.98 BTU/hr. Plan panel cooling accordingly in dense enclosures.
Where the 1756-OB16E Fits
Oil and gas operators use this module to drive 24 VDC solenoid pilot valves on wellhead control panels and pipeline block-and-bleed skids. In factory automation, it actuates relay coils and indicator lamps on conveyor and packaging lines. Because it accepts any 1756 local or distributed chassis, you can place it near the field devices and cut copper runs.

Installation and Setup Notes
The 1756-OB16E uses a removable terminal block — either 1756-TBNH or 1756-TBSH. Module keying is electronic; RTB keying is user-defined mechanical. Confirm your chassis slot width and RTB choice before installation. For 1756 racks, the module suits standard ControlLogix chassis including 1756-A4, 1756-A10, 1756-A13 and 1756-A17.
Compatibility and Integration
The 1756-OB16E works with any 1756 ControlLogix controller and can serve as local or distributed I/O. When integrating into a ControlNet, EtherNet/IP or DeviceNet architecture, confirm cabling and gateway requirements with your supplier before commissioning.
Selection Checklist
Before ordering, verify your load voltage falls within 10-31.2 VDC, your per-point current stays at or below 1 A at 60 °C, and your total module current stays at or below 8 A at 60 °C. Confirm the correct removable terminal block and chassis slot. Oil AutoTech offers hands-on technical selection help and fast dispatch, worldwide, on ready-to-ship ControlLogix spares.
