Product Overview
Plant-floor networks have evolved from isolated relay logic to interconnected ControlLogix systems where a single timestamp error can ripple through reports, event triggers, and fault analysis. The Allen-Bradley 1756HP-TIME answers that evolution. It is a ControlLogix GPS Position and Time Services module that locks your control network to a coordinated, GPS-referenced time base.
Built by Rockwell Automation under the Allen-Bradley brand, this single-slot module installs directly into a 1756 ControlLogix chassis. It combines an integrated Ethernet port, an IRIG-B BNC connector, and an SMA antenna terminal in one unit. The result is accurate time synchronization across Ethernet, the backplane, and IRIG-B networks.

Why Timing Accuracy Matters
The 1756HP-TIME supports IRIG-B, PTP over Ethernet, NTP over Ethernet, and backplane CST/UTC conversion. In practical terms, every device on your network shares the same clock reference. That matters when you generate production reports, capture event timestamps, or investigate an abnormal shutdown.
With 1,200 milliamps drawn at 5V from the backplane, the module fits standard ControlLogix power budgets. The 20 AWG spring-clamp terminals simplify field wiring, and the 30V continuous isolation protects the backplane from the Ethernet and IRIG-B sides.

Applications Across Oil, Gas, and Automation
In oil and gas pipelines, SCADA systems depend on synchronized timestamps to correlate pressure events across remote terminals. The 1756HP-TIME delivers that GPS-locked reference.
In power generation, sequence-of-events recording requires millisecond-level alignment. The IRIG-B port lets this module act as master or slave clock on an existing IRIG-B network.
For discrete manufacturing, the Ethernet ports use Rockwell Automation dual-port switch technology, so you can daisy-chain devices without extra hardware.
Integration and Setup
The 1756HP-TIME works with Studio 5000 Logix Designer for configuration. Set the initial IP address through a BOOTP/DHCP server, then assign the module to any slot in a 1756 ControlLogix chassis.
Integration Note
Wiring into PTP or NTP networks may require an external gateway or connection module. Confirm cables and gateways with your supplier before commissioning.
Maintenance and Reliability
Check the PPS, SYNCH, and OK LEDs during routine inspections. The PPS indicator toggles every second for 100 ms when the time source is locked. The SYNCH LED confirms lock status, and the OK LED shows healthy startup or flags a hardware fault. Because the module has no enclosure rating, keep the chassis environment within the 32-140 F operating range and free of conductive dust.
