Why the 1756-OB8EI Belongs in Your ControlLogix Rack
Downtime in oil, gas, and industrial automation lines rarely comes from the controller. It comes from the I/O that drives the field. The Allen-Bradley 1756-OB8EI is a ControlLogix discrete output module built to keep those loads switching: eight electronically fused, individually isolated sourcing channels in a single slot.
Each channel delivers a nominal 24VDC output across a 10-30VDC range. That headroom matters when you are energizing relay coils, pilot lamps, horns, sirens, and solenoid valves on a busy skid. One channel fault does not take the card down, because isolation and electronic fusing are per point.

Technical Specifications That Drive Cost Control
Current Ratings and Thermal Budget
The 1756-OB8EI carries 2 A per channel at 60 °C, with 10 A per module at 60 °C and 16 A at 55 °C on a linear derating curve. Power dissipation is 4.7 W at 60 °C. In a cabinet full of cards, that number sets your cooling load and your enclosure sizing. Plan the derating curve before you add channels, not after.
Backplane and Switching Behavior
Backplane draw is 250 mA at 5.1VDC and 2 mA at 24VDC, so the module is light on the chassis supply. Output signal delay is 1 ms maximum OFF to ON and 5 ms maximum ON to OFF. For most valve and relay duty, that is fast enough to keep cycle times tight without overspending on a specialty card.
Isolation and Diagnostics
Each point is individually isolated and electronically fused. The module supports configurable fault mode and program mode behavior, with last state, on, or off options. Default for both is off. That gives you a predictable safe response when the processor drops out of run.
Where This Module Earns Its Place
On a wellhead control panel, the 1756-OB8EI switches pilot lamps and valve solenoids while keeping each circuit isolated from the next. A fault on one solenoid does not cascade into the rest of the skid.
In a pipeline monitoring station, the 8-point density fits compact racks where panel space is expensive. Fewer cards mean fewer slots, less wiring, and lower installed cost per point.
On a factory floor running distributed I/O, the module works with any POINT I/O communication adapter, so you can push outputs closer to the machine and cut copper runs.

Installation and Compatibility Notes
The 1756-OB8EI installs in a single 1756 ControlLogix chassis slot and uses a removable terminal block, either 1756-TBCH or 1756-TBS6H. It is open-style with no enclosure rating, so it belongs inside a protected panel. Operating temperature is 0-60 °C, with non-operating range of -40-85 °C and 5-95% non-condensing humidity.
When integrating into a ControlLogix or distributed I/O network, confirm your adapter, cabling, and gateway requirements with your supplier before commissioning.
Selection Checklist Before You Buy
Verify your load current per point against the 2 A rating at 60 °C. Check total module current against the derating curve. Confirm you have the correct terminal block on hand. And confirm the lifecycle status and availability with Oil AutoTech before ordering.
