Allen-Bradley 1769-SDN DeviceNet scanner for CompactLogix. Discontinued 2025-12-31; replacement 1788-EN2DNR. Fast dispatch, worldwide.

Product Description

When a CompactLogix Line Loses Its DeviceNet Link

A CompactLogix cell that suddenly cannot see its DeviceNet nodes stops production. The 1769-SDN is the Allen-Bradley scanner module that sits in the Compact I/O (Bulletin 1769) family and gives the controller a direct path to DeviceNet devices. It supports 125, 250 and 500 Kbps baud rates and can manage up to 64 nodes, so one module can coordinate a large device network from a single chassis slot.

Rockwell has discontinued this module as of 2025-12-31. The official engineering replacement is the 1788-EN2DNR, an EtherNet/IP-to-DeviceNet linking device. That is an external DIN-rail unit, not a slot-for-slot in-chassis scanner, so the migration changes panel layout and network topology. Please verify current lifecycle status and availability with Oil AutoTech before ordering.

Key Parameters That Drive the Decision

Specification Value
Product type DeviceNet scanner module
Series CompactLogix / Bulletin 1769
Baud rates 125 / 250 / 500 Kbps
Node capacity Up to 64 nodes
Backplane current 440 mA @ 5V
Power dissipation 4.7 W
Isolation 30V

The 440 mA at 5V draw matters when you total the backplane budget. The 30V isolation protects the controller side from transients on the DeviceNet trunk. The 4.7 W dissipation is modest, so cabinet thermal load stays predictable.

Where This Scanner Earns Its Place

On an oil and gas skid, DeviceNet often links valve banks, drives and remote I/O. The 64-node capacity lets one 1769-SDN serve a whole skid rather than several smaller networks. In a packaging line, the 500 Kbps setting shortens scan time when many nodes exchange small data blocks. In a retrofit, the module drops into an existing 1769 assembly and reuses the integrated bus, so the controller keeps its 5V and 24V distribution.

Fitting It Into the Panel

Compact I/O modules install on a panel with two screws or on DIN rail. They lock together via tongue-and-groove and share an integrated bus through a movable bus connector. The module plugs onto the controller’s right-side expansion bus. A 1769 power supply module feeds the bus and supports up to eight I/O modules per side. Keep the 0 to 60 C operating range in mind when planning cabinet ventilation.

Integration Note

Wiring into a DeviceNet network may require an external gateway or connection module. Confirm cables and gateways with the supplier before you commit to a layout.

Planning the Replacement

Because the 1788-EN2DNR is an external linking device, budget for DIN-rail space and a network re-architecture rather than a direct swap. If you need to keep existing lines running, ready-to-ship spares reduce downtime risk. Oil AutoTech offers hands-on technical selection help for both paths.
