Buyer’s Guide to the 1769-ADN/B DeviceNet Adapter
The Allen-Bradley 1769-ADN/B is a DeviceNet adapter module from the CompactLogix / Bulletin 1769 family. It lets a 1769 Compact I/O rack operate as a slave node on a DeviceNet network, bridging local I/O to a scanner such as a 1756-DNB or an SLC/PLC-5 master. If you run distributed packaging, material handling, or automotive assembly lines, this module keeps your existing I/O rack talking to the network without a full platform migration.
Note that Rockwell Automation discontinued this product on 2016-12-31, with no planned replacement. For plants still running CompactLogix or MicroLogix 1500 systems, sourcing tested spares is the practical path. The 1769-ADN/B carries one DeviceNet port with auto-detect baud rates of 125/250/500 kbps. It supports up to 30 I/O nodes and moves 180 input plus 180 output words of data. Backplane current draw is 500 mA at 5V DC for Series B, and the DeviceNet supply accepts 11-25 VDC (90 mA at 24V DC). Isolation is rated 30 V continuous, with heat dissipation of 4.7 W max. The module mounts on DIN rail or panel and operates from 0 to 60 C. Power supply distance is 5 modules for Series B.

Installation and Network Integration
Mount the module on a DIN rail or panel, then lock it to adjacent 1769 modules using the tongue-and-groove design and movable bus connector. The controller distributes 5V and 24V DC across the bus; a 1769 power supply module supports up to eight I/O modules per side. Keep the power supply distance limit of 5 modules in mind when planning the rack layout.
For DeviceNet wiring, confirm cable type, trunk length, and termination with your supplier before installation. Multi-status LEDs for module, network, and I/O diagnostics simplify commissioning and fault finding. If you are migrating toward EtherNet/IP, note that 1768 controllers accept add-on modules such as the 1768-ENBT; a gateway approach may suit newer architectures.
Maintenance and Lifecycle Planning
Because the 1769-ADN/B is discontinued, treat every unit as a critical spare. Inspect connections and LED status periodically, and keep the module within the 0-60 C operating range.
