Allen-Bradley 1756-IF16 ControlLogix analog input module: 16 single-ended or 8 differential inputs, 16-bit resolution, 4-20 mA and voltage ranges.

Product Description

When a Legacy Line Needs Modern Analog Coverage

A process engineer at a gas compression station faced a familiar problem: sixteen legacy transmitters needed monitoring, but the existing analog card was obsolete and rack space was gone. The answer was the Allen-Bradley 1756-IF16, a high-density ControlLogix analog input module that packs 16 single-ended or 8 differential inputs into one slot of a 1756 chassis. For teams modernizing control rooms without adding cabinets, that density changes the project scope entirely.

What the 1756-IF16 Actually Does

Built for the ControlLogix / Bulletin 1756 platform, this module converts field voltage and current signals into 16-bit digital values for the controller. The 1756-IF16 accepts +/-10V, 0-10V, 0-5V and 4-20 mA ranges, covering the majority of pressure, flow, level and temperature transmitter outputs found in oil, gas and industrial automation. Sigma-Delta conversion delivers stable readings on slow-moving process variables, while the differential mode suits low-level signals in electrically noisy plants.

Because the module is non-isolated, all channels share a common reference. That design keeps channel density high and cost per point low, but it demands disciplined field wiring and a solid grounding strategy. The 250V isolation between input and backplane still protects the ControlBus side of the system.

Where It Fits in the Field

In upstream oil and gas, the 1756-IF16 handles wellhead pressure and flow loops where transmitters cluster in one area. A single card covers a full separator package, reducing spare-part count and cabinet footprint. In water treatment, the 4-20 mA range maps directly to level and dosing signals. For plant upgrades, the module drops into any slot of an existing 1756 chassis, so engineers can expand analog capacity without redesigning the rack.

The module’s 0 to 60 C operating range matches typical control-room and sheltered cabinet environments. Installations exposed to direct sun or extreme cold should account for enclosure climate control, since the card itself does not extend beyond that window.

Integration and Commissioning Notes

Configuration happens in Studio 5000 Logix Designer, where each channel is set for its range and filter response. The chassis backplane carries data to the controller at high speed, and communication modules in the same rack can bridge to EtherNet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet or DH+/Remote I/O networks. If your architecture uses one of these fieldbuses, confirm cabling and any gateway or connection module requirements with your supplier before commissioning.

For wiring, keep single-ended channels on a common reference and reserve differential pairs for low-level or long-run signals. Because the 1756-IF16 is non-isolated, separating analog commons from noisy digital returns prevents ground loops that show up as drifting readings.

Maintenance and Lifecycle

The 1756-IF16 is an active product. The Series A version was discontinued in 2021, and the current Series B remains in production with no replacement announced. Periodic checks should focus on terminal torque, shield integrity and channel drift against a known reference. In dusty plants, inspect cabinet filters so airflow keeps the module within its rated range.

Please verify current lifecycle status and availability with Oil AutoTech before ordering, especially if you are matching an existing Series A installation.

Buying the Right Module

Before purchase, confirm your chassis has a 1756 power supply with headroom for 150 mA at 5.1V and 65 mA at 24V per module, and verify whether your signals need single-ended or differential wiring. Oil AutoTech offers hands-on technical selection help and fast dispatch, worldwide, so you can match the exact configuration to your application.
